Sunset Beach Yoga and the #SoberSeptember Challenge

I’ll be honest, I’m not someone who looks forward to Fall. I don’t like the change in weather, I hate the shorter days and I don’t understand the pumpkin spice obsession. That being said, I believe Fall is the season that inspires the most internal change. Spring and Summer seem more externally focused – this is when people make goals to get in shape and eat better in order to look good for outdoor events. Maybe it has something to do with associating September with the beginning of a new school year, but I’ve always felt like this is the time of the year to set personal goals or complete internal challenges.

This month two of my friends and I decided to try out 30 days of no alcohol. I wouldn’t say I’m a HUGE drinker in general, but I definitely like to go out with friends on the weekends, relax with a glass of wine and sample different tequilas. Not drinking for a whole month is probably something I haven’t done since maybe late high school. While I was interested in the physical changes, (No hangovers for a month?? Clear skin? YES PLEASE.) I was most interested to see how much I rely on alcohol socially. I got out of a seven year relationship last December, so the past year has been filled with A LOT of dating. Dates inevitably revolve around alcohol – typically at a bar for a first meet up. What I’ve realized is that in this situation, it’s hard to remain objective about your date. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and makes you wantΒ to connect with that person even if it’s not necessarily a match. I wanted to also test the guys – would anyone actually meet up with me if I suggested coffee or a walk?

Anyway, we are about 3 weeks in, just one week left! I’ve filled up my time well over the past few weeks and am running the San Francisco Bridge to Bridge race next Sunday which will mark the end of #SoberSeptember. I will be writing another post about what I learned from the experience in a few weeks.

One of the positives about doing this challenge has been I’ve actually had the time to go out and experience more things in the city! I attended one ofΒ Outdoor Yoga SF’sΒ events in January and loved it. I don’t do a lot of in-studio yoga, but I love any excuse to practice outside. Outdoor Yoga SF hosts several events each month, usually at either Crissy Field or Baker Beach. The Baker Beach Sunset Yoga is a Silent Disco experience. When you arrive at the designated spot on the beach, you are given a pair of wireless headphones and lay out your mat facing the ocean. This time RX Bars (my favorite!!!) and Zico Coconut Water gave out free snacks too. The yoga session starts about an hour before sunset and you listen to the instructor’s cues through the headphones. Beach-y, relaxing music is played the whole time and just as the sun starts to set, everyone goes down to the water and goes into a kind of impromptu silent dance party on the beach. The session ends with another ten minutes or so of a kind of guided meditation. I attended the “End of Summer” sunset yoga event, but they do them almost every weekend weather permitting until it gets too cold. Check out www.outdooryogasf.com to see their full schedule!
